How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of the outdoors, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your indoor space. Because they are so important to a home, they see a lot of action. It’s wise to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that it make it less painful to clean the exterior of your windows from the inside of your house, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will stay there for a long time otherwise, and doing this first will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Make sure not to use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces indoors. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

There are more tips, too! We recommend cleaning your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution quicker and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals favor microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean all year long.
